Teaching Economics with Current Events
July 2006
The UIC College of Business Administration’s Center for Economic Education proudly announces a new course in economic education, Teaching Economics with Current Events, to be offered October 28 through December 2, 2006. This 1 credit hour class taught by Dr. Helen Roberts will blend traditional face-to-face meetings with online work.
Course topics will enable participants to critically evaluate and answer everyday economic questions such as why good used cars are difficult to find, what is wrong with “just” or “fair” prices, and what the story is behind coffee prices. Participants will develop the ability to apply economic concepts to history, geography, and civics classes for junior high and high school students. This course will utilize both scholarly and popular writings on economic topics, including Steven Levitt’s Freakonomics and Tim Harford’s The Undercover Economist.
Both teachers and non-teachers are welcome to enroll. Detailed information on this course will be available soon.
UIC Changes to 4.0 Grading Scale
October 2004
With the University’s transition to Banner, a new data system, UIC grade point averages will change from a 5.0 scale to a 4.0 scale. UIC student records, dating from 1985 to the present, will be imported into Banner and converted by the end of November 2004. The new 4.0 scale will be compatible with grading scales on the Urbana-Champaign and Springfield campuses.
A failing grade will be represented by the more traditional F instead of E.
If you need help interpreting the new grading scale, please email us at oce@uic.edu or call us at (312) 996-8025.

OCE Launches New Interactive Website
May 2004
The Office of Continuing Education has launched a new database-driven website with many helpful interactive features for both students and faculty.
The website, which has a fresh new look, was designed with student ease and convenience in mind. On a 24/7 basis, students now can search the online catalog for available courses, and, for the first time, also can enroll and pay online.
On the new site, students will have access to a special “My Courses” page where they can view a record of the courses they have taken through OCE and access information specific to certain courses. Once students have a profile in the system, this information will automatically populate enrollment forms, further simplifying the enrollment process for students.
Faculty offering courses through OCE will find features on the website that make working with OCE more convenient. Behind the scenes and in preparation for offering credit courses, the standard process for gaining approval will now be completely electronic. And, once a course has been approved, faculty will have access to a real-time roster view that allows them to track the enrollment progress of the course.
The new look of the website is the work of Scott Mann, a Chicago area web designer.
The website and database were developed for OCE by UIC’s Center for the Advancement of Continuing Education, a campus unit that specializes in development of interactive database-driven web applications.
