Description :

Using a number of films (some classics, others less well known), dealing with the two world wars that shaped 20th century France, this seminar will look not so much at the violence of war, but at how these films depict the ways in which wars -- at different degrees of distance -- shape and affect human relationships, among men, between men and women, among women and children. This perspective will help delineate the different impact of each war on French society and remind us of the extent to which aspects of these wars still trouble France today.

Films will include: Jean Renoir's Grand Illusion, Bertrand Tavernier's Life and Nothing But, Claude Chabrol's The Eye of Vichy, René Clément's Forbidden Games, Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows, Louis Malle's Lacombe, Lucien, Marcel Ophuls's The Sorrow and the Pity, Alain Resnais's Night and Fog. Films will be shown in French with English subtitles.
